By Sunday, 220 million Europeans will have been vaccinated against Covid-19 at least once – around 60 percent of adults in the EU. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen gave this figure today at the EU summit. In July, the Commission expects to receive at least another 90 million vaccine doses from Biontech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson. In addition, there could be more than 30 million doses from Astrazeneca, but this has not been confirmed.

The projections put the commission on track for its vaccination target, with enough vaccine delivered by the end of July to allow 70 percent of adults to receive at least one shot. Experts assume, however, that this will not be enough to contain the pandemic. For one thing, two shots are needed for immunization with almost all vaccines. For another, it must reach as high a proportion of the total population as possible, not just adults.

“The task now is to increase the pace of vaccination campaigns in the member states,” von der Leyen wrote on Twitter. Vaccine deliveries are expected to grow in the second half of the year. Thus, from the beginning of July to the end of September, 497 million doses should come, and from October to the end of December, another 399 million doses. So far, a total of 424 million doses have been delivered since the start of the vaccination campaign, according to the commission.
